HERITAGE DC AREA TOURS      

TOUR #1 -WASHINGTON/VIRGINIA - BOTH SIDES OF THE POTOMAC

Our morning begins with a visit to Arlington National Cemetery; is a walk through our American heritage. We witness the "changing of the guard" at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, an inspirational and moving sight. The tour then stops at the grave of John F. Kennedy, with its eternal flame. Then via the beautiful George Washington Memorial Parkway, we travel to Old Town Alexandria, which George Washington helped to survey and which he considered his hometown. Here in Old Town, you will have an introductory riding tour covering such sites as Gadsby's Tavern, Carlyle House, Ramsay House, Captain's Row and the Lee Boyhood Home. Time will be allowed for "lunch on your own," and for the full enjoyment of Alexandria's famous shops featuring import & specialty items from around the world. Our afternoon continues on as we return to the era of George and Martha Washington. The ordered walks, lawns, splendid trees and gardens all reflect the care and planning which Washington lavished on his beloved estate, Mount Vernon. The Georgian mansion has received meticulous attention in restoration and is very close to the form in which Washington left it.

TOUR #2 - ANNAPOLIS AND THE NAVAL ACADEMY

Annapolis has been called "the most perfect example of a colonial town existing today in America." Surprisingly little has changed since Maryland's capital was laid out in 1695. In fact, Annapolis has the greatest concentration of 18th- century architecture to be found anywhere in the United States. The local shops and stores are occupied by people living grandly in great, 18th-century mansions or modestly in hidden-away cottages. You will be greeted by a costumed guide, dressed in the period of early colonial times, will escort our coach throughout the streets of this historic area, highlighting many of the government buildings and homes of many of Maryland's patriots and signers of the Declaration of Independence. Our stops will include the State House, the oldest capital building in the nation, (dating back to 1695,)the United States Naval Academy, (the undergraduate college of the US Navy, established 150 years and a visit to the City Dock, with the Market House and the many restaurants surrounding the dock area. Here you can make your selection and indulge yourself in some of Maryland's famous delicacies. You will have an opportunity to explore the quaint streets and shops, either with our guide or on your own.

Welcome to Washington, the nation's capital, the city that belongs to all Americans. The core of the city is found in its beautiful and impressive monuments and memorials, a reflection of the ongoing city planning which has contributed to making Washington one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
Our morning begins with a stop at the exterior of the White House for a photo-op. Learn about the life and lifestyles of the famous occupants of this famous building throughout our nation's history. Learn about the influence of Jacqueline Kennedy in preserving Lafayette Park and this unique area of the capital city. We continue on to Capitol Hill to view the exterior of the US Supreme Court, the Library of Congress and the US Capitol, including the Senate and House of Representatives Office Buildings. A highlight of this day will be a stop at the newly dedicated Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial. Located directly across from the world famous Tidal Basin, the memorial features a park of granite walls, waterfalls and bronze sculptures that depict Roosevelt's presidency from 1933-1945. We continue on to visit the nation's greatest monuments to America's history; the Lincoln, Vietnam and Korean War Memorials. A catered box lunch will be enjoyed at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial along the banks of the reflecting pool. The afternoon continues with a visit to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, where the group will tour of the Hall of States and the Hall of Nations, along with the opportunity to view areas furnished with gifts of many nations in tribute to our fallen president. Next, we travel along beautiful Embassy Row, home to more than 100 foreign governments. The afternoon concludes with a stop at the Washington Cathedral. Here the group will have a private, guided tour of the interior of the magnificent Gothic structure modeled after the great cathedrals of Notre Dame, Chartres and Milan.

Our morning begins with a visit to the National Arboretum, the nation's own sanctuary offering 444 lovely acres of trees, shrubs and flowering plants from across the United States and around the world. We will then stop to tour The US Supreme Court; the massive, classical building which houses the highest court in the land and where the nine presidentially-appointed Justices rule on Constitution matters. A highlight of this day is at Washington's last great Victorian showplace, The Library of Congress. Amid a profusion of fresco paintings, status, bronzes, arches, pillars and mosaics of every imaginable hue, is 600 miles of shelves and 20 million bound volumes.

We begin our special day with a stop at the Woodrow Wilson House Museum, President Wilson's retirement home, which displays original furnishings and memorabilia, presenting a picture of upper middle class life in the 1920's. Next we stop at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum; dedicated to presenting the history of the persecution and murder of millions of victims of Nazi tyranny from 1933-1945. Through oral recollections, written narratives, authentic objects, still and moving images, the story of the period of world history will unfold for the visitor over three floors of evocative and unique exhibitions.

TOUR #8- HILLWOOD MUSEUM AND GARDENS CANCELLED

The morning begins with a private tour of the Hillwood Mansion, the home of the late Marjorie Merriweather Post. Here you will see what has been termed "the most representative Russian collection outside Russia." This 40-room mansion of red-brick was built in l926 in the Georgian style. We continue on to the elaborately landscaped grounds at Hillwood, which include a formal French parterre and an authentic Japanese garden. A greenhouse contains many unusual species of orchids and cutting flowers for the house. The picturesque Dacha, a one-room adaptation of a Russian country house, lends a special charm to the garden.
